Sestamibi Parathyroid Scan

Sestamibi Parathyroid Scan

5000+ scans done & counting

A SESTAMIBI Parathyroid Scan, also known as Parathyroid Scintigraphy, is a diagnostic imaging technique primarily used to detect problems with the parathyroid glands. The parathyroid glands are four small glands located in the neck that produce parathyroid hormone (PTH), which helps control the level of calcium in the body. Abnormalities in these glands can cause hyperparathyroidism, a condition characterized by excess PTH and, consequently, high calcium levels.

In a SESTAMIBI Parathyroid Scan, a small amount of a radioactive substance known as Technetium-99m sestamibi is injected into the body. This substance is absorbed more by the overactive parathyroid gland than by normal glands or other tissues. The radioactive substance then emits gamma rays, which can be detected by a gamma camera to produce detailed images of the parathyroid glands, assisting doctors in diagnosing and treating potential issues.

Specific Instructions:

Before undergoing a SESTAMIBI Scan, patients should consider the following instructions:

  • 1

Fasting : Fasting is usually not necessary for this scan, but it is always best to confirm this with your doctor or the radiology department.

  • 2

Allergies : Patients should inform their doctors if they have any known allergies, although allergic reactions to the radioactive substance are extremely rare.

  • 3

Medication :Patients should provide their doctors with a list of all the medications, supplements, and vitamins they are currently taking, as some medications can interfere with the results of the scan.

  • 4

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding :Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should inform their doctor, as the radioactive tracer used in the scan could be harmful to the baby.

  • 5

Hydration : No specific instructions related to water consumption or restriction apply unless otherwise directed by the doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions

During a Sestamibi Parathyroid Scan, a small amount of a radioactive substance is injected into a vein in your arm. After the injection, you will wait for about 2-3 hours as the substance travels through your body and is absorbed by your parathyroid glands. Then, you will lie down on a table, and a special camera will take pictures of your neck area to detect any abnormal parathyroid glands.

A doctor may recommend a SESTAMIBI Parathyroid Scan if you have symptoms or lab results indicating hyperparathyroidism, such as fatigue, bone pain, kidney stones, or unusually high levels of calcium or parathyroid hormone in your blood. The scan can help identify which of the parathyroid glands are overactive and causing these symptoms.

The only discomfort you might feel is when the radioactive substance is injected, similar to having a blood test. The scan itself is painless.

The risks are minimal. The amount of radiation you're exposed to is low and not harmful for most people. However, as with any radiation exposure, there is a small risk of causing cancer. Also, pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid the scan, as the radioactive material could potentially harm the fetus or the nursing baby.

The actual scanning time is usually about 30 minutes. However, the entire process, including waiting time after the injection, can take 2-3 hours or more.
