EC Renogram, also known as EC Renal Scan or Renal Scintigraphy, is a medical imaging procedure that evaluates the function and anatomy of the kidneys. It’s used to examine how well the kidneys are working and whether there is any obstruction to the urine flow. The kidneys are vital organs that play a crucial role in filtering waste products from the blood and regulating blood pressure, electrolyte balance, and red blood cell production. The EC Renogram is particularly useful because it provides essential data on both the structure and function of the kidneys, which is not always available from other imaging methods.
Note: Home Sample Collection is only for Pathology lab tests.
EC Renogram test involves the use of a small amount of radioactive material and a special camera to take pictures of the kidneys. Ethylene Cysteine is a radiopharmaceutical agent that is injected into the bloodstream and then processed by the kidneys. The agent emits gamma radiation, which is detected by a gamma camera to produce images that can show the size, shape, and function of the kidneys.
Medications and Allergies : Inform your doctor of any medications you are taking and if you have any allergies, especially to iodine or contrast materials.
Hydration : Drink plenty of water before the procedure to ensure good hydration.
Clothing : Wear comfortable and loose-fitting clothing. You might be asked to wear a gown.
Fasting : Generally, fasting is not required for an EC Renogram.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding : Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
On the day of the procedure, you’ll be taken to a special room equipped with a gamma camera. You’ll be asked to lie on an examination table. A nurse or technician will insert an intravenous (IV) line into your arm or hand through which the Ethylene Cysteine will be injected.
The gamma camera will then take pictures of your kidneys. It’s important to remain still during the imaging process to ensure clear images. The procedure usually takes about 30 minutes to an hour.
EC Renogram is used to:
Assess kidney function : It measures how well your kidneys are processing waste.
Detect kidney diseases and infections.
Evaluate blood flow to the kidneys.
Check for any obstruction in the urinary tract.
Monitor the kidneys post-transplant.

The needle's slight prick may cause a mild discomfort but that is all. you are required lie or sit still for about 30 minutes as the gamma camera captures a sequence of images depicting the tracer's journey through your kidneys.
The examination involves ionising radiation, which is relatively small and similar to many other routine medical imaging tests. As with any medication, there exists a slight possibility of an allergic or adverse reaction. If you have any concerns, kindly consult with your physician.
